Old Bartonians' Association

An organisation of ex-pupils and staff of Barton Peveril School, Eastleigh, Hampshire.

Barton Peveril originated in 1904 as Eastleigh Pupil Teachers' Centre with Miss Annie Smith as Head Mistress and occupied rooms at the Eastleigh Railway Institute on the corner of  Leigh Road and Market Street.  In 1909 it moved into the Wesleyan Hall at the back of the Methodist Church in High Street.   By 1917 it was known as Eastleigh Secondary School and Pupil Teachers' Centre and in 1918 moved into Barton Peveril House on the Bishopstoke Road where it eventually became County Secondary School, Barton Peveril, Eastleigh.  In 1932 the school moved to Desborough Road and became Eastleigh County High School.  In1957 the school moved once again to its current home at Chestnut Avenue and became known as Barton Peveril Grammar School.  In 1973 it was made a 6th Form College and became Barton Peveril College which has its own website at www.barton-peveril.ac.uk

Latest Photo: 1975 Upper Sixth

Jane Page (Nash) with help from former classmates, in particular Malcolm Clarke and Marion Dymar (Smith), has amazingly identified everyone on the 1975 Upper 6th photo - 214 names in total.

Claire Newman (nee Wallace) 1975-77 was being modest when she said "she had quite a good memory for names" - she sent in an amazing total of 64 names from the 1977 Upper 6th Form photo, most of whom she says came up from the Mountbatten school in Romsey.  Janet Dixon (nee Newton) (1963), who now lives in Australia, identified herself in the 1964 and 1967 school photos. Tom Bowling, also now living in Australia, identified his brother Geoffrey, amongst others, in the 1947 and 1951 school photos.  Stephen Pickles (1966) has beaten Claire Newman with over 70 names from the 1971 4th and 5th years' photo!

Janita Leckey (Cant) sent in some names, and made a number of corrections, to the 1962 and 1964 photos.

Biddle Cull, was able to name over 30 of her classmates in the 1928 school photo - that's 87 years ago!  ( Sadly Biddy is no longer with us - see Summer 2015 Newsletter)

Andrew Goddard 1968-75 identified himself and 16 others in the 1971 4th and 5th years'  photo and

Tony Martin 1956-63 sent in over 40 names from the 1958 and 1962 school photos.

Liz Giles (nee Bell) has recently emailed some names from the 1976 6th form photo.

Thanks to Jenny Mansbridge (Marshall) for identifying herself and her sister Glenda in the 1964 school photo.

Harry Ford 1964-71 has come up with more than a few names from the 1967 and 1971 school photos.

John Renshaw identified a number of 5th formers in the 1964 photo.  Rosemary Barnes recognised two pupils in the 1971 1st, 2nd and 3rd years  photo.

Geoff Biggs 1971-77 has recently provided 27 names from the 1971 Junior photo and 25 names from the 1977 6th form photo.

Jane Page (Nash) 1968-75 has added more names and corrections to the 1971 Junior photo when she was then in the 3rd form.

David Thomas, history teacher at BP, 1965-71, has provided us with a number of names from the 1967 junior and the 1971 senior school photos.  Now retired David organises walks in the Austrian Alps through his website www.sollwalks.co.uk This is totally non profit making.  Apart from walk details, which might not interest anyone not going there to walk, it has stunning photos of each walk.

Paul Baker 1961 has emailed several names in the 1964 photo.  Andrew Hicks 1965-72 identified himself in the 1967 junior and the 1971 senior school photos.  Bern McKenna identified his sister-in-law Barbara Philp in the 1947 school photo.

Many thanks to Mike Hoyle for listing several names from the 1979 photo including Brynja Maughan, who sat on the first committee of the OBA when it reformed in 1997, and also a famous actor - no prizes for guessing who!

Thanks to Jon Dunman for naming several pupils in the 1976 school photo, Mike Gay for for naming many in the 1962 and 1964 photos, and Jeff Wells for a good few in the 1979 photo.

Thanks also to Dave Church for identifying quite a few names in the 1962, 1964 and 1967 school photos.

Deborah Hicks recognised a number from her year group of 1967 in the 1971 4th & 5th years school photo.

If you recognise anyone in the school photos not already listed, then please let me know: jbarron6@sky.com (John Barron)
